What Foods Can Help Manage Eczema? The Power of an Anti-Inflammatory Diet.

Attention parents! If your child is struggling with eczema, you know how confusing and frustrating it can be to manage it.

While food doesn't cause eczema, it can trigger flare-ups in some cases. However, the good news is that certain foods can actually help improve your child's eczema symptoms. Pairing an eczema-friendly diet with a daily skincare routine can work wonders for managing sensitive little skin.

So, what exactly is an eczema-friendly diet?

Inflammation plays a big role in eczema, as the skin becomes inflamed in response to allergens. To help manage eczema, it's important to include foods with natural anti-inflammatory properties in your child's diet. This can help reduce eczema flare-ups and make your child feel more comfortable.

What anti-inflammatory foods can help eczema?

  • Fatty fish: Salmon contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acid, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Regularly Including salmon in your child’s diet might help reduce eczema flare-ups. As your child ages, you may consider giving them an omega-3 supplement.
  • Probiotic-rich foods: Probiotics, including supplementation, are being considered more and more for children with eczema and allergies. Probiotic-rich foods can help build a strong and healthy immune system that can better withstand eczema triggers and allergies. The most well-known probiotic-rich food is yogurt which contains live cultures. Other common foods which are naturally high in probiotics are sourdough bread, miso soup, soft cheeses, and naturally fermented pickles.
  • Prebiotic foods: There is currently limited research on the effect of prebiotic foods, specifically on eczema. However, prebiotics is known to promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which can have a positive impact on overall immune function. A strong immune system can help reduce the severity of eczema symptoms and improve overall skin health. Therefore, incorporating prebiotic-rich foods such as asparagus, bananas, honey, oatmeal, and some beans into a child's diet can benefit their overall health, but it should be done in consultation with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
  • Foods high in quercetin: Quercetin is a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine. Histamine is released into the body as part of an allergic reaction. Quercetin lessens the amount of histamine produced by the body. Foods that contain quercetin include broccoli, cherries, apples, blueberries, spinach and kale.
  • Anti-oxidant-rich foods: No surprises here! Fruit and vegetables are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants help the body prevent infection and fight off disease. With fussy eaters, you might consider supplementing your child’s diet with a multivitamin to make sure their nutritional requirements are being met.
  • High Vitamin C foods: Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine and antioxidant. Strawberries, rock melon, citrus fruits, kiwi and leafy greens are all high in vitamin C.

A reminder of what foods can trigger eczema…

Food allergies are more common in children who also have eczema. If your child has eczema, food allergies can trigger eczema symptoms but are not the cause of eczema.

Allergies that are common in eczema are; dairy proteins, eggs, soy products, nuts, peanuts, gluten, fish, and shellfish.

Remember, it's essential to speak with your doctor before making any significant changes to your child's diet, especially if they have allergies. While foods that are thought to be eczema-friendly can be helpful, they should not be consumed by individuals who are allergic to them. So, if your child is struggling with eczema, consider trying an eczema-friendly diet and a daily skincare routine to help manage their symptoms.
