We know to keep a check on making sure our children drink enough water to keep their skin well hydrated – but what effect does water have externally on their body when we give them a bath or shower?
The benefits of water for eczema
Water can benefit eczema skin by removing triggers and irritants which sit on the skin’s surface and cause our children to be itchy and scratch which can possibly lead to infection.
It also softens the skin which means during and immediately after the bath or shower is the best opportunity we have to lock the most amount of hydration into the skin using nourishing bath products and thick moisturisers.
Spending the right amount of time in the bath or shower for eczema
Spending a short amount of time in the bath, no longer than 10 minutes in the bath, and no longer than about 3 to 5 minutes in the shower is very important for eczema skin. The reason is that spending too much time in the bath or shower can start to dehydrate the skin, and start to take moisture out of the skin.
Testing the temperature of the bath and shower water for eczema
The temperature should be lukewarm when you bathe or shower your child – temperatures hot or very warm will be dehydrate the skin. Hot or very warm temperatures will also increase your child’s body temperature which might irritate their skin and cause them to itch and scratch.
The impact of water quality and hardness on eczema
There are differences in water quality and hardness around Australia and the world and this can affect eczema. Some studies have found that harder water high in minerals such as magnesium and calcium can dry our skin and be an environmental trigger for eczema. This is not a cause of eczema, but can aggravate the condition and dry our skin. Even when water is on the softer side, chlorine and some of these minerals can cause some skin dehydration.
Using bath time to help manage eczema
