When it became clear my baby had eczema the first question I wanted answered was how I could treat his eczema naturally. Three and a half years later we have tried so many natural remedies and treatments. There is nothing which was recommended to me that I didn’t try and not every natural eczema treatment made a difference to my baby’s eczema.
Treatments which help me manage eczema naturally
- Taking probiotics
I started mixing probiotics into my baby’s milk from when he was four months old. While the evidence for probiotic use to treat different infant conditions is mixed, there is evidence which suggests probiotics help manage allergies and provide relief from eczema symptoms, and this has been my experience. Research also indicates that probiotics are safe and well tolerated in healthy infants and children.
Researchers at the Universities of Milan and Paris analysed studies that looked at probiotics for the prevention of eczema. The results show probiotics do offer some protection against eczema:
– 34 out of 100 babies who were not given probiotic supplements went on to develop eczema.
– 26 out of 100 babies who were given probiotics, or whose mothers took probiotics, went on to develop eczema.
So probiotic supplements were found to prevent eczema in 8 out of 100 babies in these studies.
- Using colloidal oatmeal in the bath
We spend a lot of time at Itchy Baby Co raving about the benefits of dissolving colloidal oatmeal in the bath to target eczema naturally and that’s because it really helps soothe eczema symptoms.
In the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology published article; Colloidal oatmeal: history, chemistry and clinical properties, they talk about studies where colloidal oatmeal has been used in the treatment of eczema naturally. One of the studies they discuss is where 139 patients used a colloidal oatmeal bath for three months more than 71% reported a complete or dramatic reduction in itching. More on the benefits of using colloidal oatmeal for eczema can be found here.
- rubbing coconut oil into the skin
Pure organic, 100% coconut oil is easily absorbed into the skin making an excellent natural moisturiser. Coconut oil is said to have antibacterial, antioxidant and antifungal properties that can help heal the skin. It also has vitamins and nutrients like lauric acid, caprylic acid, capric acid and Vitamin K and E, that can help with itching and targeting eczema naturally. I use coconut oil to give my baby a massage every other day. Of course, don’t use it if your baby is allergic to coconut.
