Managing eczema can affect everything that our children’s skin comes into contact with. Eczema skin can react to a variety of triggers and we know that laundry detergent can be one of them. We get asked a lot about the best laundry detergent to use for eczema or laundry detergent alternatives and recently I have switched to using organic soapberries.
What are Soapberries?
Soapberries are a 100% natural and sustainable alternative to chemical laundry detergent and they’re perfect for people with eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, skin sensitivities or any other skin allergies. They’re naturally hypoallergenic and gentle enough to use on baby clothes and cloth nappies. They are also antibacterial and antifungal which means they kill germs and remove odours, but are completely fragrance free.
Where can I find organic soapberries?
I didn’t know anything about soapberries before so I contacted That Red House an Australian company who specialise in organic Soapberries. That Red House source their soapberries from the pristine Himalayan mountains where soapberries contain a luscious amount of saponin – a natural soap. When they hit water, the soap is released, making them an amazing laundry detergent.
The fact that soapberries are not processed in any way, simply picked from the Sapindus Mukorossi tree (they’re actually a fruit) and dried in the sun makes them raw, vegan, paleo, completely natural and with no added chemicals, fragrances or nasties. Ancient cultures have been using these little guys for thousands of years – and they’re making a comeback!!
How do you use soapberries as a laundry detergent?
Soapberries are super simple to use – just add 5 berries in the cotton bag provided with your soapberries and pop them in with the clothes in the machine. Cold water is fine and they work in both front and top loaders. Warm water will draw more soap out the berries if the load is particularly soiled.
If you haven’t tried Soapberries and you have been meaning to, the team at That Red House Organic Soapberries have kindly offered our itchy baby co. lovers 10% discount on their soapberries purchases for the month of April. Just use the code “Nomoreitchybaby” at the checkout.
I really hope this helps in managing your little one’s eczema.
